The Lune Valley is an undiscovered gem of England's North Country.
This valley, between the historic city of Lancaster and the picturesque town of Kirkby Lonsdale, is one of the most attractive stretches of the River Lune imaginable. This river meanders through a valley of outstanding natural beauty, where you will find unspoilt and ancient villages, historic churches and winding lanes, tumbling streams and wooded valleys, wild moors and lowland pastures.
The largest place within this district is the City of Lancaster. Lancaster boasts many attractions, not least Lancaster Castle, which is owned by Her Majesty the Queen, as "Duchy of Lancaster." The castle is open from Easter to mid December, with tours daily.
Another famous landmark of Lancaster is the cathedral, which has been described as "a fine inspiring building.......impressively detailed" One of the most noticeable buildings on the Lancaster skyline is the Ashton Memorial Folly, set within Williamson Park, home of a tropical butterfly house and foreign bird house. All these are set within 38 acres of landscaped gardens and breathtaking views.
Located North of Lancaster, Carnforth is another well known location within this area. Carnforth prospered with the arrival of the railway in the 1840's. A hundred years later, the railway made the town famous, as the location for the classic film "Brief Encounter." The station has recently been renovated and now contains a museum to the film.
Just four miles from Lancaster, the River Lune has dramatically carved a large horseshoe into the valley sides, creating an idyllic woodland setting. The Crook O' Lune is a wonderful place for picnics, with many walks and cycle ways.
Situated at the boundary where Yorkshire meets Lancashire, this great stone stands 12 feet high. It provides a viewpoint over the Yorkshire Dales, and the Forest of Bowland.
This is a wild upland landscape, comprising of high gritstone moorland, which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
